At the 2011 meeting of the American Urologic Association, Dr. Christine was appointed to the governing board of the Society of Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons. This honor is doubly important, as he now serves as the liaison for the Prosthetic Society in its interactions and association with the Sexual Medicine Society of North America. These two groups represent the largest organizations for accomplished prosthetic surgeons, and for urologists who specialize in male sexual medicine.
Dr. Christine's special area of interest is urologic prosthetics. This includes the treatment of erectile dysfunction (both surgical and nonsurgical) and male urinary incontinence. Dr. Christine is an active investigator and has presented research papers and studies at urologic meetings. He is also an active educator. He has conducted multiple patient education seminars, lectured to urologists and primary care doctors concerning the treatment of erectile dysfunction and incontinence, and instructed nearly 100 urologists, both nationally and internationally, demonstrating his surgical techniques of implanting penile prostheses and male slings as well as treating complex prosthetic cases.
Dr. Christine is board certified. He is a member of the American Urologic Association, the Society of Prosthetic Urologists, and the sexual medicine society of North America.
Dr. Christine recently traveled to Australia at the invitation of urologists from that country. In August 2009 he conducted surgeries as well as lectures to physicians, nurses and patients in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra (the nation's capital), and Port Macquarie. Dr. Christine demonstrated his techniques for the implantation of penile prostheses, male slings for the treatment of urinary incontinence, and the artificial urinary sphincter (a device used to treat the most severly incontinent men); a total of 21 cases in 7 hospitals were performed. In addition, he spoke to a prostate cancer support group on his final night in Sydney. "The amount of surgery and work I did was tremendous, but the payoff came in the form of new friendships with so many fine people and especially in the form of e-mails from patients that I operated on who have done beautifully and are well pleased." says Dr. Christine. Most of the surgeries were videotaped and will serve as teaching videos for practicing urologists as well as urologists in-training. Dr. Christine will keep up his schedule of lecturing and surgery when he travels to San Francisco in October 2009 to present a surgical video filmed at St Vincent's Hospital (Birmingham, AL) "I have been asked to demonstrate my surgery for placing a penile prosthesis and a male sling under the same anesthetic to surgeons attending a meeting of the International Continence Society; lecturing and showing this operation to such a collection of doctors is a great opportunity to advance patient care.
Dr. Brian Christine graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1991. He then completed his internship in surgery and his residency in urology at the University of Alabama. In addition to his urologic training, Dr. Christine completed one year of training in anesthesiology including post surgical pain management. He joined Urology Centers of Alabama in 1998.
