No-Scalpel Vasectomy

Originally vasectomy was not used as a form of contraception. Instead, it was used as a way to avoid infection following a prostatectomy, or later, as a means of "rejuvenation" from senility.

In the mid 1900's vasectomy began being used more commonly as a means of male birth control, and it gained in popularity through the years. In 1974, a variation of the technique was developed in China called the no-scalpel vasectomy. It was developed to lower the complication rate of conventional vasectomies seen in more rural Chinese areas. It became very popular there, and in 1985 the technique was introduced in the U.S. Currently, Urology Centers of Alabama uses the no-scalpel technique exclusively for our vasectomies. The basic concept of the procedure remains the same, but the approach to the vas has changed.

Today’s vasectomy procedures no longer have to make an incision in the scrotal skin and dissect down to the vas. Instead, we simply numb the skin and puncture it with a very sharp instrument that allows us to stretch the skin rather than cutting it, preventing the need for sutures. Also, we use a special instrument for trapping the vas through this tiny wound that will bring it up through the wound to complete the procedure. This tends to significantly lessen the discomfort and potential for hematoma after the surgery, and has made a safe, quick, successful procedure even better for our vasectomy patients.
